All about MLA style of writing

The most used style of writing for research papers is Modern Language Association (MLA) style of writing and it is mostly used for liberal arts and humanities work. MLA style sets a procedure for research paper references through parenthetical citation. It also specifies procedure for formatting manuscripts. The best way to know more about MLA style of writing is by going through MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers and the latest edition is 7th Edition. Another such popular book is 3rd edition of MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing. Some of the basic guide lines for MLA style of writing are given here below:

  • The standard size of the paper must be 8.5 x 11-inch with margins of 1 inch on all sides of the paper.
  • The font can be any legible format (EG: Times New Roman) with font size 12 and must have double spacing to be more legible.
  • The first line of the paragraph must be indented with one tab space from left of the margin and one space must be left after punctuation or periods.
  • The page number must be kept in the header on right hand corner.
  • Titles must be written in Italic format throughout and wherever necessary.
  • Endnotes most be given in a separate page before the citation page.

In MLA style a title page is not required unless it is specifically mentioned. On the first page, upper left-hand corner list your name, instructor’s name, title and date. Make sure you use quotations or Italics while referring to others works. Use section headings wherever necessary for smooth flow of the paper. And above all make sure you do not copy paste from other sources and avoid plagiarism.
